  108. 1.  WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  109. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  110.   SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
  111.   to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
  112.   1991.  In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
  113.   SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
  114.  
  115.   SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, an
  116.   individual window or a user defined portion of the screen.  SnagIt
  117.   also accepts input directly from the Windows clipboard or a Windows
  118.   bitmap (BMP) file.  Once captured, SnagIt will send the image to the
  119.   printer, the clipboard, a graphics file or to e-mail.
  120.  
  121.   Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such
  122.   as word processors and desktop publishing programs from the Windows
  123.   clipboard or by importing the images from saved graphic files.
  124.  
  125.   Software developers will find that SnagIt's full DDE support allows
  126.   it's functionality to easily be incorporated into other Windows
  127.   applications.  SnagIt also provides MAPI support for Windows 95 and
  128.   NT, allowing captured images to be readily sent in an e-mail message.

  130. 1.1 What is the SnagIt Twin Pack?
  131.  
  132.   Many organizations are in the early stages of the transition from
  133.   Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 or NT.  To assist during this period,
  134.   TechSmith is offering the SnagIt Twin Pack.  It includes a 16-bit
  135.   version, tailored for Windows 3.1x, as well as a true 32-bit version
  136.   for Windows 95 and NT. The setup program automatically detects the
  137.   workstation's operating environment and loads the appropriate
  138.   version.  The purchaser is licensed to run either version and to
  139.   switch between them without further payment. Purchasing the Twin
  140.   Pack provides the benefits of running SnagIt today without the
  141.   penalty of Windows 95 or NT upgrade fees in the future.

  144. 2.  SNAGIT TWIN PACK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  145. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  146.   In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  147.  
  148.   o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware
  149.      requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.
  150.  
  151.   o  Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows For Workgroups 3.1x,
  152.      Windows NT 3.5x or Windows 95 installed and configured on your
  153.      system.

  155.   o  A mouse or other pointing device
  156.  
  157.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  158.      bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  159.      printers that Windows supports.  Plotters are not recommended for
  160.      use with SnagIt due to their inability to print bitmaps.)

  183. 3.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
  184.  
  185.   SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  186.   subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
  187.   you'll need to use SnagIt, except for the SnagIt installation
  188.   procedure. This (README.TXT) file describes how to install SnagIt.
  189.  
  190.   To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
  191.   Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  192.  
  193.   To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
  194.   the Help menu.

  196.   To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
  197.   select System Info from the Help menu.

  289.        MS Mail has been configured (i.e. MAPI is in use, but neither

  307. 6.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
  308. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  309. 6.1 Installation Instructions
  310.  
  311.   The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  312.   application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  313.   NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  314.   automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  315.   appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
  316.   the following steps:
  317.  
  318.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  319.  
  320.   2. Insert the SnagIt Twin Pack diskette into a floppy drive.
  321.  
  322.   For Windows 95 users:
  323.  
  324.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  325.  
  326.   For Windows 3.1x and Windows NT users:
  327.  
  328.   3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  329.      from the drop down menu.
  330.  
  331.   For all users:
  332.  
  333.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  334.           a:\setup
  335.      (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than
  336.      the A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the 
  337.      command line above.)
  338.  
  339.   5. Click on the OK button.
  340.  
  341.   6. When you have finished entering the setup information, click on
  342.      the Install button to install SnagIt.
  343.  
  344.  
  345. 6.2  Uninstall Instructions
  346.  
  347.   If after installing SnagIt Twin Pack, you find it necessary to
  348.   remove the software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  349.  
  350.   Uninstall instructions for Windows 95
  351.  
  352.   1. Run the Windows 95 Control Panel
  353.  
  354.   2. Open the Add/Remove Programs applet from Control Panel.
  355.  
  356.   3. Select SnagIt from the list of applications that can uninstalled
  357.      by Windows.
  358.  
  359.   4. Click on the Add/Remove button to uninstall SnagIt.
  360.  
  361.   Uninstall instructions for Windows NT
  362.  
  363.   1. Select the FILE RUN menu option in Program Manager.
  364.  
  365.   2. Type in the command line the following:
  366.  
  367.      TSCUNST /UN /E{path of SnagIt EXE} /Psnagit32 /Gsnagit
  368.  
  369.      where {path of SnagIt EXE} is the complete path and filename
  370.      of the SnagIt executable.  For example:
  371.  
  372.      TSCUNST /UN /Ec:\snagit32\snagit32.exe /Psnagit32 /Gsnagit
  373.  
  374.   3. Press OK to uninstall SnagIt.
  375.  
  376.   If the uninstall program encounters errors, or if you have
  377.   Windows 3.x, see the following section for uninstall instructions.
  378.  
  379.  
  380. 6.3  Manual Uninstall Instructions
  381.  
  382.   If you do not have Windows 95 or encountered a problem during the
  383.   uninstall, here are the steps you can take to manually uninstall
  384.   SnagIt from your computer.
  385.  
  386.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows 3.1x and WFW 3.1x
  387.  
  388.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  389.  
  390.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt was
  391.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press
  392.      the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  393.  
  394.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt when Windows Starts" when
  395.      installing SnagIt, delete SnagIt from the Startup group.
  396.  
  397.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  398.      SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  399.      you wish to delete the program item.
  400.  
  401.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  402.      installed SnagIt.  Delete the files SNAGIT.EXE and SNAGIT.HLP.
  403.  
  404.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 95
  405.  
  406.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  407.  
  408.   For Windows 95 users:
  409.  
  410.   2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now
  411.      configure your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced
  412.      button.
  413.  
  414.   3. Find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was installed. Click
  415.      once on the SnagIt/32 filename to highlight it. Press the delete
  416.      key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  417.  
  418.   4. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  419.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  420.  
  421.      Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  422.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  423.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  424.  
  425.   5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory in which you
  426.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and
  427.      SnagIt32.HLP.
  428.  
  429.   For Windows NT users:
  430.  
  431.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was
  432.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it.
  433.      Press the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program
  434.      item.
  435.  
  436.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  437.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  438.  
  439.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  440.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  441.      that you wish to delete the program item.

  443.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you

  448. 7.  STARTING AND USING SNAGIT
  449. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  450.   To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
  451.   group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during
  452.   SnagIt installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
  453.  
  454.   Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring
  455.   it to the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt is
  456.   maximized, you may change any of the setup options (input, output,
  457.   format, etc.) from the SnagIt menus.
  458.  
  459.   You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an
  460.   image) while it is maximized, though it will usually be more
  461.   convenient to minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
  462.  
  463.   If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during
  464.   installation, SnagIt will start automatically the next time you
  465.   start Windows.
  466.  
  467. 7.1 SnagIt Default Settings
  468.  
  469.   When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
  470.  
  471.   o  Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked,
  472.      it will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  473.  
  474.   o  Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt is
  475.      invoked, it will send the captured image to the Windows default
  476.      printer for printing.
  477.  
  478.   o  Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt will capture the
  479.      image with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can
  480.      print images using this format setting, even if your printer is
  481.      not a color printer. For additional information about SnagIt
  482.      format options, see the Format options topic in the SnagIt Help
  483.      file.)
  484.  
  485.   o  Printer Scale is set to Fit on Page.  This means that SnagIt will
  486.      output the captured image (on paper) at a size similar as the
  487.      image appears on the Windows screen but will reduce the image if
  488.      it is longer than one page.
  489.  
  490.   Refer to the SnagIt Help file for additional information on setting
  491.   SnagIt's input, output, format and other options.
  492.  
  493.   You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom
  494.   of the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.
  495.  
  496. 7.2 Invoking SnagIt with <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  497.  
  498.   Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are
  499.   ready to perform screen captures with SnagIt.
  500.  
  501.   The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  502.   When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined
  503.   by the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the
  504.   output device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different
  505.   hotkey combination, see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help
  506.   file.

  508. 7.3 Using the Mouse to Select Images
  509.  
  510.   You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
  511.   The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  512.  
  513.   Left Button     Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen
  514.                   regions and windows to capture.
  515.  
  516.   Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press
  517.                   it before you finish making the selection (that is,
  518.                   before you release the left mouse button).
  519.

  521. 8. REGISTERING SNAGIT TWIN PACK
  522. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  523.   This program and its associated files are part of an evaluation
  524.   package copyrighted by TechSmith Corporation. SnagIt is not in the
  525.   public domain.  This program must be registered if it is used
  526.   beyond the 45 day evaluation period.
  527.  
  528.   Single-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  529.  
  530.   Registration entitles the licensee to install either the 32 bit or
  531.   the 16 bit version of SnagIt and to switch between the two without
  532.   further payment.  The single-user license price is $39.95.
  533.  
  534.   When you register SnagIt Twin Pack, you have the option of
  535.   requesting a registered version of the software on diskette or of
  536.   requesting a software key to register the version you have. The
  537.   software key immediately removes all registration reminder screens
  538.   and evaluation expiration dates.
  539.  
  540.   Multi-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  541.  
  542.   Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
  543.   of SnagIt, in any combination of 16 bit and 32 bit. A single diskette
  544.   is shipped along with the multi-user license.  The 10-user license
  545.   price is $200.00.

  547.   Registration Instructions
  548.  
  549.   1.  Select the SnagIt program's Help menu.
  550.  
  551.   2.  Select How to Register from the menu.
  552.  
  553.   3.  Click on the Registration Form button.  Enter your registration
  554.       information in the fields provided.
  555.  
  556.       NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register.
  557.             Your software key will be personalized for that name
  558.             ONLY.  Your key will NOT not work if you change this name
  559.             after you have sent in your registration.
  560.  
  561.   4.  When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file
  562.       called REGISTER.TXT in the SnagIt default directory. This is
  563.       your registration and order form.  It includes a price sheet and
  564.       your Product ID number.
  565.  
  566.   5.  Windows Notepad will now open REGISTER.TXT automatically,
  567.       allowing you to edit and or print the registration form.  While
  568.       you are editing, please complete any blank items, including
  569.       quantities, totals, and payment information. DO NOT EDIT THE
  570.       PRODUCT ID NUMBER. Note that shipping charges are only
  571.       applicable to diskette orders.
  572.  
  573.   6.  Return the registration form, with payment, to TechSmith
  574.       Corporation by any of the methods described on the form.  Upon
  575.       receipt of your order, TechSmith will generate your diskette or

  657. INSTALLING SNAGIT TWIN PACK

  659. The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  660. application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  661. NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  662. automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  663. appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
